Aluna George, comprised of Aluna Francis (vocals) and George Reid (music) held a one off performance at London’s trendy Sanderson Hotel.

First time I heard Aluna George, I intrigued by her 90′s R&B type vocals infused with a soulful electric pop beat.

I like their quirky sound and I’m glad to be hearing her track “I know you like it” growing in popularity over mainstream radio stations (especially Radio1 and 1xtra).

It was great to see her perform at the relaxed and fresh Sanderson Hotel, and I look forward to seeing her again this Saturday at the Wireless Festival to ;-)

I’m going Bongo for Bangles: Love To Shine Launch New African Inspired Jewellery Range”

Caribbeans at the front of creativity. Caribbean Fashion Week, the highlights!

“What I would have given to attend Caribbean Fashion Week, which took place in Kingston, Jamaica, June-7-11.”

Although it’s been a few weeks gone, I am still envious about having missed Caribbean Fashion Week.

Where does my envy start?

It wasn’t missing an amazing performance by Grammy award winning UK songstress Estelle or mingling with the likes of Kelly Rowland, Eve or Nia Long. It was missing out on watching some of the most extraordinary, eccentric and fierce fashion designers showcase their work to the world. Since I saw LaQuan Smith debut his candy collection in Jamaica last year, I have had my ear pressed up on all the upcoming talent set to be coming out of the Islands. I also had the honour of talking about what was in store for CFW this year with some top designers at London Fashion Week AW12 back in February as part of the British Fashion Council’s International Showcase.

Since its inception in 2001, Caribbean Fashionweek has been the main catalyst for Caribbean fashion industry development. The ambitious event has brought the world of fashion to the region, as it seeks to focus international attention on what the Caribbean has to offer, while, at the same time, working with stakeholders to build capacity and generate business for Caribbean stylists.

A plethora of exciting designers from across the Caribbean including Cedella Marley, daughter of reggae legend Bob Marley, who have been busy designing a collection of Jamaica Olympic team gear for Puma, showcased her new swimwear collection High Tide, whilst the talented designer Tigerlily, whose host of celebrity fans include Keira Knightly, previewed their collections to an audience filled with Caribbean fashion industry who’s who and aspiring stylistas.

Other highlights of Caribbean Fashionweek 2012 included supermodel and Karl Lagerfeld muse Jeneil Williams and face of Ralph Lauren Oraine Barrett who recently made a cameo appearance with Rihanna in her ‘ Man down’ video, returning to grace the catwalk.

CFW is the largest, most far reaching and strategically important fashion event in the region. Pulse has developed an event of a high international standard to showcase the best of the Caribbean’s designers, as well as other world regarded stylists from various parts of the globe. Approximately 50 designers from 20 countries participated the event this year.

In the running to, and after CFW, designers have been featured in Vogue, The Associated Press, The Independent, The Sunday Times, Fashion TV Paris, Italian Vogue, The Guardian, The New York Times, i-D, The BBC and a host of other media around the world. The event has since received a number of awards and has been recognized by no less an entity than British Vogue, as an important new development in world fashion.

The challenge

The challenge remains to effectively assist Caribbean designers in their efforts to build their businesses, so that they can take full advantage of the marketing that the event creates, utilise the experience gained, the international press generated, the buyers’ marketplace provided and the Business Forums presented: in short the full CFW experience. Fashionweek continues this process in 2012 and on wards.

African & Caribbean Business Expo

“The Caribbean’s Creative industries are possibly the most significant identifier of the region’s brand and potential on the world stage. If we are to become less susceptible to the economic shocks of the west we must begin to play to our strengths and start to really explore the possibilities our creative industries have for taking real Caribbean excellence to the world. We see our involvement in the expo, as a fantastic opportunity to really put on show some of the many commercially viable business entities and opportunities which the Caribbean has to offer. It will be the place where Brand Caribbean is seen as realistic alternatives to traditional investment instruments.” CEDA Executive Director Pamela Coke-Hamilton

The African and Caribbean Business Expo takes place from 4 – 10 August 2012 at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane sponsored by the Caribbean Export Development Agency (CEDA.) The event will bring together leaders in business, senior government officials from around the globe and international broadcasting and news outlets, and CEDA will stage several events which showcase the diverse creativity and investment potential for the region. These events include a documentary, Built to Last on fifty years of sporting excellence, a music concert, a fashion show featuring footage from Caribbean Fashion Week in Jamaica, an architecture exhibition at Westminster University and a series of business seminars moderated by Britain’s leading business figures. I hope to attend the African & Caribbean Business Expo and will be bringing you all back the latest on what’s to come.

It seems like everyone has something to say today about Jeremy Scott’s JS Roundhouse Mid high tops for Addidas. Scott always been known as a style extremist, so I was quite intrigued that people took this particular style to heart. As you can see the trainers have been designed to include an imitation of an ankle cuff, historically a symbol of slavery…and several other things.

I can fully understand why the historical content of an ankle cuff would resonate uproar for some, however ankle cuffs have been used for several other methods such as bonding and farming lol. In my opinion it’s obvious that the style is nothing more than a wild, tongue and cheek take on fashion. A designer who is highly rated amongst the lives of Rhianna, Beyonce, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Lil Kim and Ciara (but to name a few) is hardly bound to suddenly go Willy Lynch, with a contract from Addidas on his back.

Who knows, maybe I am just too liberal, but I don’t seen how Ni**as in Paris can reach the top of the Billboard, whilst a pair of trainers with a bondage imitation seems to have crossed the line. Sounds like a double standard to me. Admittedly, I am not the trainer type, but they are funky and fierce, and frankly this slavery trainer talk needs to be put to rest.

Fortnightly update on HEAL GEL @healgel it’s working

Having been asked by a quite a few readers on twitter and instagram how I am getting on with my skin care regime I thought I should update you that it’s going great. A fortnight ago I posted about Heal Gel, a skin repair gel which has been used my medical professionals to help reduce inflammation of the skin, whilst repairing dark scars left after spots and scars in dark skin known as keloid scars. so far the results are as I hoped.

I decided to have a skin intervention having seen pictures of my less than healthy looking skin from the Afro Hair & Beauty show, and I’m pleased to say that since then things are looking significantly better wouldn’t you agree?

I should note that I have not been using Heal Gel in isolation. I have been cleansing with Clean & Clear blackhead cleanser and moisturising with a small amount of aqueous cream. However, I had already been using Clean & Clear and aqueous cream prior to the Afro Hair & Beauty show and not did not start seeing an improvement until I started using Heal Gel.

I am not a product junkie and always endeavour to find a solution for any skin or well being related problems by first looking at my lifestyle before considering any chemical solution. So in addition to using the product I have made a significant effort to do the following.
-
1) Increase the proportion vegetables and fish in my diet to get in more antioxidants and essential oils
2) Kept to a consistent cleansing and application routine
3) increased physical out door activities to get more fresh air and perpetrate in order to open up my pours
4) Select hairstyles that keep my hair away from my face and sensitive areas as continuous contact with hair grease can often be a catalyst for troubled skin.

Therefore I would say for anyone who feels they have exhausted their options trying to reduce inflammation on their skin or repair scared skin from past episodes, I recommend Heal Gel. I have had a few people expressing reservations about the price v.s quantity, but I have been using a small amount twice a day for two weeks and I am barely a fifth through the glass tub. So I am confident that not only it works but will last me a reasonable while to. Personally I would prefer to pay £35 and call it day, rather than spending £10 or so on numerous products which are uniformally ineffective.

The second instalment of Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL) returns on 3rd and 4th August 2012. Following the unprecedented success of last year’s event, AFWL has relocated to London Spitalfields, recent winners of a Best New Open Space award. This year’s event is set to be bigger and better with a larger venue, more designers and tons more exhibitors. This will be the first large scale event to showcase UK and non-UK based seasoned and emerging fashion designers inspired by Africa.

This exuberant event is a one stop shop for prospective buyers in search of fresh and creative designers. Africa Fashion Week London delivers buyers the most extensive buying platform for African inspired fashion today. Exhibitors at the show represent all regions of Africa showcasing, ready to wear and couture garments, jewellery, fashion accessories and beauty products.

The showcase debuted last year with an impressive turnout of almost 5,000 over attendees, the two day extravaganza created an unparalleled platform for over 50 international designers to showcase their collections. With the Olympics this year, all corners of the world will be focusing on what London has to offer, on and off the race tracks. H&M styles- Too legit to quit

This spring summer I have been shopping at H&M by default, and it’s not just because their clothes are über affordable but because they are bloody stylish to. The other day it occurred to me that not only was I looking *Missisipi accent* mighty fiiine, but it just so happened I was covered head to toe in H&M SS12 wear (minus the denim jacket I got last year).

Growing up I often got a lot of stick for living out in ‘the sticks’, away from most friends, the city’s bars, restaurants and general hubub, but having been raised in a countryside village for almost all my life, I always had an appreciation for the suburban silence. It’s powerful peacefulness which I suppose could be described as silently noisy.

In January, I moved into a new place which edges slightly more closer to the city, but despite being closer to the metropolis which I spend most of my time in or commuting to and/or from, I mourn my mother’s home in the countryside, and so decided on Saturday to take a 5 mile walk from my flat to hers along the country lanes.

I documented my journey using a Nikon D80 SLR with a wide angel lens. The journey was both calm yet exciting. It was relaxing to take in the surroundings, breath in the fresh air and pass the horses and cows on my journey, however, it was quite exhilarating (borderline scary), to be the only person in sight within a 3 mile radius, walk along a, windy, narrow pavement-less road trying to not get run over by cars travelling it over 50mph.

The most exhilarating feeling came from singing Jessie J whole album at the top of my lungs knowing that there is completely no-one around to hear me, besides the cows in the fields, whose milk likely turned sour as a result of my singing…sorry cows!

I found a few random items on my journey, a ladies hand bag, a discarded 80′s pop CD and a white slipper. In the city of London, litter and rubbish is rife and often goes unnoticed, however, in such a deserted and sparsely littered place, I couldn’t help think about the stories regarding how those items came to be there. Especially the handbag.

HEAL GEL- Advanced formula skin therapy gel product review

As you may or (and I hope) may not have noticed, I seem to have broken out slightly around my face and neck. In the past I have not been one for spending money on pimple erradicating products as I have found that with a change in diet, more sleep and more water, most skin problems just go away. However, on this occasion I have done all those but with no avail and have tested the market to see what’s out there.

For the past 5 days I have been using Heal Gel, available online at Victoria Health (£33.50). The gel has been traditionally used for scaring, keloid scars (scars that a prone to women with dark skin), blemishes and aged scar tissue. Although at 25 I highly doubt I have any aged scar tissue, I would like to heal any dark patches pimples, spots and other blemishes. So far so good, but I will try it for 3-4 weeks and keep you updated on the results.

Here is some more information on the gel:

The Soothing Group contains:

Arnica Montana – A plant-derived anti-inflammatory. This has been shown in clinical trails to significantly reduce bruising and swelling. When the smallest of your body’s blood vessels are damaged they let blood leak into the cells around, and as the haemoglobin in the seepage breaks down it discolours the skin – result, bruises.
Madecassoside – A valued and valuable plant-derived anti-inflammatory. The plant it comes from is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb.
Haloxyl TM – Another anti-inflammatory, which has been shown in studies to reduce bruising .
Glistin Glutamylaminomethyl Indole – This is a peptide – a little chain of amino acids, like proteins but shorter, in fact so tiny they can be absorbed by skin. It maintains the nerve cells so they don’t burn or itch so much. It has been shown in studies to work as a mild local pain reliever.
Biodynes® TRF® – Derived from yeast. Another anti-inflammatory which also actively renews cells and helps them breathe more easily.

The Repair Group contains:

Collaxyl® Vinci02® – More peptides which has been shown to help repair the surface and undersurface layers of the skin, and stimulate the undersurface cells to make the protein collagen.
Oristine® – This peptide’s job is to encourage the enzyme SIRT1, which helps regulate the way cells age and deal with stress.
Signalline® – This tells the signalling enzymes of the body to pass on the message to regenerate the surface and undersurface skin layers and produce more collagen.

The Anti-Scarring Group contains:

Polysilicone-11 – A silicone that stays on the surface of the skin as a gel and seals it, so that the rest of the ingredients can work undisturbed. It also softens and flattens the visible surface of the wound. Plastic surgeons have used silicones for years to improve scars, and they are very successful in flattening early, red scars when the wound has fully healed.
Methylsilanol hydroxyproline aspartate – Hydroxyproline is an amino acid, a big part both of collagen and of elastin, the protein that controls the elasticity of connective tissue fibres. It has been shown to help keep damaged tissue from losing its texture and stretchiness.

Despite afro hair texture and maintenance being quite the enigma outside most African and Caribbean communities, every year there is an event where the secrets, tips and tricks for afro hair are revealed, showcased and celebrated, and that is at the Afro Hair and Beauty Show London.

This year the hair and beauty ‘carnival’ took was held at its newest location, the Business and Design Centre, Islington (nearest station- Angel); and having been selected by Black Hair Magazine (aka The Hair Bible), I was uber excited about not only attending but being part of the events festivities.

Having recently passed my one year mark as a natural, it was encouraging to see more natural hair workshops, products and information than I have ever seen at previous AHB shows. A few of the workshops and seminars over the two days were:

Hair modelling for Black Hair Magazine

Black Beauty and Hair Magazine vs. Black Hair Magazine

On occasion people get confused between Black Beauty and Hair Magazine and Black Hair Magazine. Being that they are both successful publications on black hair, fashion and style; I often get asked which one is the better of the two. (In my opinion), Black Beauty and Hair Magazine does not come close to Black Hair Magazine. It’s a premium publication if you are interested in well researched, well written, on trend and on topic conversations and features on black fashion, hair and style. Furthermore, it has fewer full spread adverts and wider and more balanced variety of natural and relaxed hairstyles plus and much better quality of editorial content.

So for future reference, if you have always been confused between the two, IN MY OPINION Black Hair Magazine surpasses in quality and quantity. Boom, I said it!

Anyways, back to the point, Black Hair Magazine were looking for natural hair models for the AHB show, so having gave my availability to Keysha Davis, Editor of BHM, she agreed to pair me up with Charlotte Mensah, renowned natural hairdresser and owner of Notting Hill based salon Hair Lounge.

Charlotte would be taking a modern approach to an traditional African hair style called threading.

…I realized that on almost every natural hair blog, whenever people talk about African hairstyles, noone ever talks about thread, and it’s such a beautiful beautiful hairstyle with so many options from conservative to really daring.” ~ sugabelly ->; Taken from Black Girl With Long Hair

The threading technique (also known as Ghana plaits) I believe originated from Ghana but has been adopted in countries all over Africa as a style that mothers often did for their children to stimulate hair growth. Threading can be achieved using ordinary sewing thread or plastic thread. On this occasion Charlotte used plastic thread to tie my hair, she created sections using a fine comb and wrapped the thread around my hair. As my hair is quite soft and at times slippery (even without oil), she tied the ends and created a bow type design so that the threads don’t open.

I was both surprised and excited with the amount of people that came over to view Charlottes threading demonstration, many of whom had lots of questions. Here are some FAQ from the session with some answers:

How long can you keep them in for? You can keep them in for up to two weeks

How do you watch your hair if it’s in threads? This style is not meant for frequent washers, it is recommended that you do not wash your hair until it’s time to take the threads out.

How can you thread long hair? You do this by folding the hair up on itself, and tying the thread around the folded hair.

Where can I get the plastic thread? This particular thread is from Ghana, but ordinary sewing thread works fine providing it’s not too thin.

Where can I get my hair threaded? You can get your hair threaded at Hair Lounge, Notting Hill, prices start from £7 onwards.

What are the benefits of threading? Threading stimulates hair growth and helps to stretch natural hair without the use of extreme heat.

Meets and greets

The AHB show was a great place to finally several tweet peeps whom I either subscribe to or talk to over Twitter but had not got round to meeting. At the show I bumped into the lovely Natalie creator of Beauty Pulse London, Ms Fola B, creator of Black Girl Flow, media mogul and enterprenur Cyril aka Orignal Scars, African Fashion Designer Simone Williams, art & creative director Ola Shobowale and hair naturalista Tina, creator of Manestream Beauty.

In addition to the hair based festivities, there were scheduled fashion shows showcasing innovation in African design. However, the only designs I really liked were those by Simone Williams, the rest didn’t stray too far from what we have seen on previous ASH shows. I hope that’s one area that can be focused on for next year.

Otherwise it was a fun day out, with lots of samples, magazines and brochures to try and test out and although I didn’t spend much, I did buy an Organics inner hair deep repair, and was also excited to see Miss Jessie doing live natural hair demonstrations! I believe they will be retailing through Paks soon!

Alongside the Queens Jubilee, there is a lot to get excited about this month! Some of my favourite artists are coming to London city and I can barely contain myself.

Erykah Badu will be playing at the Hammersmith Apollo on June 27th as part of the London and Manchester blues festival. Alongside Badu will be performances by Georgs Benson, Hugh Laurie, The Brand New Heavies and Tom Jones. Link to tickets
