Adrien Sauvage High-res version

“I am not a tailor, I am a designer. There are no boundaries.”

Adrien Sauvage, Ghanaian born, British designer is the artist for whom my closet is currently lusting over. I have yet to visit his ‘appointment only’ London Boutique, situated at 48 Maddox Street, but owning a A.Sauvage custom suit is definitely on my style to do list.

-

Having started his career at the ripe age of 22, and his first collection entitled “This is not a suit” was received instantaneously, and stocked in Harrods and the London boutique Matches. As part of the collection Sauvage shot a case study on individualism, photographing ‘Captains and Natives’ of industry, subjects who would not normally be seen in suits. The campaign received positive media attention from the likes of GQ, Esquire, Vogue, Style.com, Financial Times and the Evening Standard, and has been worn by several influential people and celebrities. In fact I recall TV presenter Reggie Yates recently getting a suit fitted by Sauvage on Instagram only last week!

Having recently won that battle in converting my boyfriend of 90’s boot cut to a better and more modern fitting slim, I am stand by Sauvage whose mantra is to ‘D.E” (Dress Easy) but without draping yourself in XXXL sizes.

“We like to show our bodies and I want to teach men that they can wear a slim fitting suit.” Interview with Adrien Sauvage for Vogue Black

The A.Sauvage collections are not exclusive to men, in fact far from, in his recent interview with Vogue Italia; Sauvage describes his decision to create “mens wear for women”. As you will see from images from his recent look book below, these suits are power armour for the assertive woman. The collection he created, was inspired by what Sauvage calls his deep affinity with the opposite sex.

-

“Women have a level of sensitivity I can relate to. I understand what women want and need…I think sometimes women like to feel like men. Look at how many powerful women are out there in the world; redefining power dressing for women.”

Aside from his short film “This is not a suit,” released in 2010 was the designer’s first film, also selected and shown at The Sundance Film Festival in 2011. Sauvage showcased his collaborations with anti-establishment style icon Dr.Martens.

-

“It came about through a friend of a friend. They looked at my feet and didn’t pair me up with wearing a suit and a pair of Doc’s. These are the first Doc’s I have ever bought and I wear them day-to-day. The reason I wear them with a suit is out of all my outfits, I don’t need to have another pair of shoes. I’ve been to Berlin, lived in LA and I’ve been in New York and come back to London and it has been that diverse shoe that I can wear anywhere. I then spoke to Dr Martens and they found that interesting. They are anti-establishment like ‘this is not a suit’ and so we just hooked up and had a few conversations, we liked each other’s branding and it came off the back of that.”
