As it’s the 1st of August and I am gradually counting down to Notting Hill Carnival, and figured it would be a great time to show Nicki Minaj’s new video for ‘Pound the Alarm’ taken off her second studio album ‘Pink Friday- Roman Reloaded’ for anyone that hasn’t seen it yet!

It’s a fun and authentic carnival themed video and I love how she’s representing for the Trinidad massive; it’s been exciting to see both Nicki and Rhianna putting their Caribbean heritage on the map as predominantly it has been Jamaican artists that have held the limelight among globally successful Caribbean artists. The video was shot in Trinidad at Queen’s Park Savannah on July 4, 2012. Several Trinidian carnival characters appear in the video such asDame Lorraine, Blue Devil, Jab Jab, and others and towards the end of the video, posing in the video with her cousins from Trinidad. Director Benny Boom, who filmed Minaj’s “Beez in the Trap” and “Right by My Side” videos, is also directing her “Pound the Alarm” video.

Although not my favourite off the Pink Friday- Roman Reloaded album, I love Pound the Alarm as a euro-dance and hip hop summer anthem! I found the video for Starships surprisingly boring and quite pointless, so having watched her performance at the Hackney Weekend in June I have been eagerly anticipating a video that’s as vibrant and fun as her past videos.

On a side note, I was amused that in May Nicki asked her fans on Twitter to choose the next single following Starships, the poll was divided into three categories. The third and final category asks to choose between “Pound the Alarm”, “Whip It”, and “Va Va Voom”. “Va Va Voom” had the most votes and won the poll. “Whip It” came in second and “Pound the Alarm” came in third. Nevertheless, she confirmed on Twitter in June that she will choose Pound the Alarm anyways. So much for consumer insight?!

Great video to get me in the mood for Notting Hill Carnival taking place at the end of August, let me know if you’re going!
