Sorry! The lifestyle you ordered is currently out of stock

I drove past this sign on my way through the Canary Wharf district in East London, and managed to take a photo before the traffic light turned green. Naturally, I gave it a Google, and not to my surprise it was another one of Banky’s social commentaries.

Not ignoring its location, I felt it spoke about the individualised social and economic insecurities that have grown among many as a result of nurturing a ‘consumer credit culture’. With fewer lenders offering credit and the increasing popularity of pay day loan providers,  a frightening number are left between shock and a hard place to keep up with a lifestyles that are no longer available or sustainable.

As stated by a market insight report by Ipsos Mori “The shock of 2008 is still rumbling… and we are only slowly getting used to the reality of austerity”.

Maybe it’s time for people to rethink their existing lifestyles and create a similarly rewarding but sustainable alternative to what we know. Which brings to mind a quote first said by Will Rogers, and recently tweeted by Will Smith:

“Too many people spend money they don’t have…to buy things they don’t want…to impress people that they don’t like”. .

  1. Think I’ve been past that sign as well, and thought it was a prophecy
