If there’s one woman who deserves recognition on International Women’s Day, it is my fellow market research, and hair and beauty enthusiast, Natalie Clue. A leader in championing the visibility of black beauty products, companies an professionals in the UK, she’s also the founder and powerhouse behind the networking and mentoring event Keziah CONNECTIONS – an organisation for the professional, enterprising Woman of Colour with a Passion for all things Beauty.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Natalie as business woman and more importantly as a friend, which is why I was ecstatic to see her as a speaker at this year’s Women of the World (WOW) Festival, speaking on the ‘Politics of Afro Hair’. For centuries, women of colour have been told that their hair in its natural state isn’t good enough, raising a range of vital and emotive questions from; Do we judge black women by whether or not they straighten their hair? Is the afro still a political hairstyle? And do Michelle Obama’s bangs really matter?

Other speakers include: Keysha Davis, editor of Blackhair magazine, journalist and writer Funmi Fetto and journalist Eva Simpson. Chaired by jounalist and author Hannah Pool.

What’s up peeps? It’s FRIIDDAY does solo Mexican wave

As I told you in my blog post a few weeks back I did some filming for BBC Three as part of their Body Beautiful Series. They called me in to share my views on natural hair vs. weaves. As you know, I went natural a couple years ago and would never look back. I am not anti-weave entirely but I don’t like outdated and derogatory perceptions of good vs. bad hair within the context of afro hair. I should also point out that I made several points which weren’t included in this short feature such as:

*The rise of natural hair blogs and open source natural hair care education

*Natural hair in the media

*The dangers associated with hair relaxers and long term synthetic hair use

*A history in perceptions of beauty

*Great afro salons to visit

Although it’s a shame that they only showed about 5% of what I said, I have two quick points I would like to make.

1) Good hair is healthy hair!

I’m not anti-weave/hair extensions, but I am strongly against the perceptions of good vs bad afro hair. A lot of black peoples notions regarding the perceptions of good hair link back to colonialism with mixed race black peoples’ features being regarded as more attractive than non-mixed race blacks; for example, lighter skin vs. darker skin, looser curls being preferable to tighter curls, or straight vs. kinky hair etc. By now we should be moving away from outdated western perceptions of beauty and know that there is beauty to be seen in all of the above.

2) Isn’t it easier to appreciate what’s yours than depending on what’s not and will never be?

If your health is in full working condition and you cannot leave the house because you’re reliant on some synthetic add-on or another to over compensate for a physical/and or mental insecurity, it is a dependency personality disorder. It might sound like I am being a bit extreme, but it is the truth, and unfortunately it is rife in the female black community and their relationship with hair :-(

Filming for the BBC Three Body Beautiful series – Changing perceptions of #naturalhair

Last Friday I made my way down to Loft Studio’s in North West London to be filmed for the a new BBC Three series entitled The Body Beautiful, a season of programmes starting this autumn, exploring the topic of body image. I was called in specifically to talk about the relationship between the black female community and our relationship with synthetic hair (hot topic I know!!)

The Body Beautiful season features a collection of enlightening documentaries that question whether making changes to your body can bring you happiness whilst highlighting the variety of ways young people are striving for these physical changes.

Filming with Mentorn TV for this documentary was a great experience. I sat in the studio whilst I was recorded and asked questions about my opinion on the matter. Obviously, I won’t give away too much, but I did relay my views about the shame which many women carry because of their hair texture, and how our efforts to hide it relate back to colonialism and adhering to western perceptions of beauty (consciously and/or subconsciously). However, I also touched upon how that is changing amongst younger generations, with the rise in blogs and magazines which have increased the access to natural hair care education and positive images of women with natural hair in the media.

The content will be made available on November the 27^th, and will feature online as part of the live debate show, Free Speech, hosted by Jack Humphrey, where the focus of this edition considers how much body image impacts on young people’s lives. I will be sure to let you know when it’s available to watch, but until then will be crossing my fingers, in the hope that they edited my comments graciously. I would not class myself a icon for natural hair, or anything else for that matter, but I do feel passionate about the topic and hope my opinions hold some weight and reflect the thoughts of those that pioneer natural hair care within in the UK and beyond.

The Afro Hair & Beauty show 2012 – a bloggers perspective @afrohairlive @blackhairmags

Despite afro hair texture and maintenance being quite the enigma outside most African and Caribbean communities, every year there is an event where the secrets, tips and tricks for afro hair are revealed, showcased and celebrated, and that is at the Afro Hair and Beauty Show London.

This year the hair and beauty ‘carnival’ took was held at its newest location, the Business and Design Centre, Islington (nearest station- Angel); and having been selected by Black Hair Magazine (aka The Hair Bible), I was uber excited about not only attending but being part of the events festivities.

Having recently passed my one year mark as a natural, it was encouraging to see more natural hair workshops, products and information than I have ever seen at previous AHB shows. A few of the workshops and seminars over the two days were:

Hair modelling for Black Hair Magazine

Black Beauty and Hair Magazine vs. Black Hair Magazine

On occasion people get confused between Black Beauty and Hair Magazine and Black Hair Magazine. Being that they are both successful publications on black hair, fashion and style; I often get asked which one is the better of the two. (In my opinion), Black Beauty and Hair Magazine does not come close to Black Hair Magazine. It’s a premium publication if you are interested in well researched, well written, on trend and on topic conversations and features on black fashion, hair and style. Furthermore, it has fewer full spread adverts and wider and more balanced variety of natural and relaxed hairstyles plus and much better quality of editorial content.

So for future reference, if you have always been confused between the two, IN MY OPINION Black Hair Magazine surpasses in quality and quantity. Boom, I said it!

Anyways, back to the point, Black Hair Magazine were looking for natural hair models for the AHB show, so having gave my availability to Keysha Davis, Editor of BHM, she agreed to pair me up with Charlotte Mensah, renowned natural hairdresser and owner of Notting Hill based salon Hair Lounge.

Charlotte would be taking a modern approach to an traditional African hair style called threading.

…I realized that on almost every natural hair blog, whenever people talk about African hairstyles, noone ever talks about thread, and it’s such a beautiful beautiful hairstyle with so many options from conservative to really daring.” ~ sugabelly ->; Taken from Black Girl With Long Hair

The threading technique (also known as Ghana plaits) I believe originated from Ghana but has been adopted in countries all over Africa as a style that mothers often did for their children to stimulate hair growth. Threading can be achieved using ordinary sewing thread or plastic thread. On this occasion Charlotte used plastic thread to tie my hair, she created sections using a fine comb and wrapped the thread around my hair. As my hair is quite soft and at times slippery (even without oil), she tied the ends and created a bow type design so that the threads don’t open.

I was both surprised and excited with the amount of people that came over to view Charlottes threading demonstration, many of whom had lots of questions. Here are some FAQ from the session with some answers:

How long can you keep them in for? You can keep them in for up to two weeks

How do you watch your hair if it’s in threads? This style is not meant for frequent washers, it is recommended that you do not wash your hair until it’s time to take the threads out.

How can you thread long hair? You do this by folding the hair up on itself, and tying the thread around the folded hair.

Where can I get the plastic thread? This particular thread is from Ghana, but ordinary sewing thread works fine providing it’s not too thin.

Where can I get my hair threaded? You can get your hair threaded at Hair Lounge, Notting Hill, prices start from £7 onwards.

What are the benefits of threading? Threading stimulates hair growth and helps to stretch natural hair without the use of extreme heat.

Meets and greets

The AHB show was a great place to finally several tweet peeps whom I either subscribe to or talk to over Twitter but had not got round to meeting. At the show I bumped into the lovely Natalie creator of Beauty Pulse London, Ms Fola B, creator of Black Girl Flow, media mogul and enterprenur Cyril aka Orignal Scars, African Fashion Designer Simone Williams, art & creative director Ola Shobowale and hair naturalista Tina, creator of Manestream Beauty.

In addition to the hair based festivities, there were scheduled fashion shows showcasing innovation in African design. However, the only designs I really liked were those by Simone Williams, the rest didn’t stray too far from what we have seen on previous ASH shows. I hope that’s one area that can be focused on for next year.

Otherwise it was a fun day out, with lots of samples, magazines and brochures to try and test out and although I didn’t spend much, I did buy an Organics inner hair deep repair, and was also excited to see Miss Jessie doing live natural hair demonstrations! I believe they will be retailing through Paks soon!

As I do not chemically straighten my hair, I occasionally hot comb it if I want to achieve a straighter look, however it’s important to take into account the damage heat does to your hair. So if you are going to apply heat to your hair make sure it’s well protected. Since the beginning of the year I have been using Mazuri Organics straightening serum; it works to prepare the hair for thermal straightening and helps to keep hair straighter for longer.

If you do happen to get the Mazuri straightening serum, I would advise using the Moroccan Oil Sheen spray. Moroccan oils are one of the rarest and richest oils in the world and have been well known for rejuvenating moisture in hair and skin, this sheen spray has been custom blended with Moroccan Argan oil and Mediterranean olive oil. It smells great and I often use it as a normal afro sheen spray, I also love that it small and handbag friendly. However, I would point out that this product has paraffinium liquid, isobutane and propane, so do bare this in mind if you are chemical cautious.

@CrystalAfro’s Afro Comb Day at the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, London

My afro and I were graciously invited to the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, to join the bloggers focus group which took place as part of Afro Comb day.

Hosted by Crystal Afro, the creator of the natural hair care blog United KinKdom, AfroComb day was an insightful collaboration between Crystal (@CrystalAfro) and Egyptologist Sally-Ann Ashton.

I was late for the first round of debates (hand over face), but I managed to be part of the second round, where I got to meet several of my favourite hair bloggers and have what I felt was very meaningful, open and honest discussions on what it was to have afro hair growing up in the UK. We swopped tips and tricks from which combs to use, products to avoid and had a humorous talk on the growing community of ‘natural Nazis’ flourishing on the YouTube landscape.

Regretfully, I had to leave earlier than the others (my fault for being late in the first place), but I had a great time, and look forward to reading what the other bloggers took away from the day. Crystal did a fantastic job at bringing together an eclectic mix of modern day natural hair bloggers to discuss what afro hair and the afro-comb means to so many. Lord knows that it’s impossible to have this level of debate is impossible on twitter with its 140 character limit!

Alas! We are beginning to see in upward shift in top fashion designers opting to have their black models extension-less. It is extremely gratifying to have seen that throughout London, Milan and Paris fashion week the ever proud afro has largely been spared the gruesome, make and break routine that all too often black models are subject to, in an effort to ‘manage’ afrohair among western fashion showcases.

”Left in the hands of hairstylists deaf to the temperament of Black tresses, Black fashion pioneers have recounted tales of their coils and strands being stretched to their breaking, frayed ends; scalps carelessly permed, harshly scorched, battered with color, and left to be restored by weaves, wigs, and the shearing of frazzled locks” Maria Carlos- Vogue Italia

I can only hope that designers and stylists are learning to understand the diversity of black hair texture and work with it rather than eradicate it. Furthermore,as afro hair care products are increasing reaching mainstream retailers and high end salons, we remain optimistic that they will soon land in the hands of industry’s top hair masters that have yet to understand how to manage and maintain afro hair.

Model Harieth Paul, had a strong presence with her coiffed fro across the catwalks of Burberry Prosum, Diane Von Furstenberg, Yigal Azourel and Costello Tagliapietra; whilst Ajak Deng made a mark with her signature short cut across the runways of Suno, Roksanda Ilincic, and Issa.

So what are your thoughts, have you noticed a shift in natural hair models this year? I suspect with the likes of Julia Sarr-Jamois and Solange Knowles growing in popularity among bloggers and fashion publications such as NYTimes and British Vogue, natural hair models, and natural hair in general is gradually being treated less contentiously.

I battled over whether this was my favourite for style, as I adore this dress. Not so keen on the colour but the fit, texture and style is adorable, and I could certainly see myself wearing it. What I love almost as much as the dress, bag and necklace was this hair style. None of the other styles moved me, but I thought the pulled back and coiled composition looked both elegant and rebellious. Definitely a winner.

Styling Short Natural Hair: Quick and Easy TWA Style with @NaturalChica

As many of you know, I had my big chop in May, and since October I have decided to let my TWA (teeny weeny afro) grow. My hair length is about 3.5 inches now, which is good, but not yet at that styling length. Hopefully by January/February I should be getting my clips and pins out. At the moment I am not using a lot of gel or alcohol based products, because I am using Live Colour XXL to dye my hair, and therefore ultimately trying to avoid any further product damage.

To shampoo I use Elvive colour protect, and then apply the Elvive protective masque for 15 mins and then rise. I use a mixture of virgin olive oil or carrot oil along with Organic Root Stimulator’s olive oil moisteriser, I am at that great stage when its short enough to wash n go.

Me in early October, TWA length was about 2.5 inches.

So between now and January I will be posting some of my favourite natural hair TWA tutorials, just to get me in the styling mood. I will be uploading more recent pictures natural hair journey so far this week!

I am going through the second stage of my natural hair growth journey, and since I have been keeping it short, general maintenance and management has been nothing short of easy. However, that time has come when it must grow, leaving me in with a 70’s, Jackson 5 look. This weekend I was very close to buying some weave (hand over face) but with some encouraging words from my boyfriend I decided against my trip. I am 24 and this had been my third ‘big chop’ experience, but it’s my first to wear it out all natur-elle, and although I am loving it; occasionally I do miss swinging some hair around… But I know what relaxer does to my hair, and because of that I MUST keep the end in mind.

So since I know I have quite a few readers going through the natural hair journey for all sorts of reasons, I just wanted to post a word of encouragement to keep the end in mind, and just get over that hump.
