A Tribe Called Quest was/is probably my favorite hiphop group of all time. Threw a quick mix of my favorite ATCQ hits I had in my collection. Most are Tribe’s songs and few select song “featuring” either ATCQ or members of the ATCQ.

Flying in from the states for an exclusive set will be A Tribe Called Quest’s DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Beat Junkie J Rocc for two rare DJ sets. Joining forces with the UK’s own DJ Yoda playing a classic Hip Hop AV set, the hardest working man in the music biz DJ Vadim and UK DMC Champ and guaranteed party starter Mr Thing. To top it off The Last Skeptik will take to the stage to get things started in the best possible way. Now this is a party.

Flying in exclusively for this show is A Tribe Called Quest DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad. An integral part of ATCQ’s iconic productions, Ali joined J-Dilla and Q-Tip in the collective The Ummah after ATCQ’s breakup and then later formed Lucy Pearl with Raphael Saadiq.

One of the original turntablists, J. Rocc founded the Beat Junkies in 1992 which became a seminal force in the rise of instrumental hip-hop. In addition to numerous mixtapes and his own production for Stones Throw releases, J. Rocc has been the DJ for Madlib’s live shows since the early 2000′s, was the 3rd member of Jaylib (Madlib & J Dilla) during the group’s live events. Selectors don’t get much more respected than this.

Joining us for the evening is a Soundcrash favourite, USSR born producer DJ Vadim. Vadim has been busy touring the US and making rooms full of people jump about like there’s no tomorrow. Catch him hyping the crowd with his eclectic mix of reggae, soul, electronica, grime, hip hop and of course his own legendary productions to top off this mega night!

Former Scratch Perverts member and DMC Scratch Champion MR THING will be doing his er, thing on the night, playing all your favourite hip hop, old school beats and breaks. Finally our boy, Corin aka The Last Skeptik has come a long way from building his first beats whilst skipping classes at school. From releasing his first 12” single in 2004 featuring Sway, he has been steadily gaining fans with his production wizardry.

On Monday I the last show from The Weeknd’s long awaited UK tour. Having played in cities such as Glasgow, Birmingham, and Manchester, the melodic man of mystery performed the last of his shows at the Electric Ballroom Camden. It was a fantastic show.

“Tickets for the gig sold out minutes after their release in December 2012 so the buzz was huge. Fans are said to have started queueing outside the venue at long before the doors opened in hopes of getting a good spot.The Weeknd, also known as Abel Tesfaye, hit the stage almost two hours after the doors opened and fans started cheering eagerly as the opening bars of High For This rang out into the Ballroom.

The Weeknd is an artist who could easily fall fatal to too much hype but fortunately, after this performance, he has blown any doubt out of the water.

The star managed to captivate and amaze both the male and female members of the audience. With the blue-and-purple-hued lights turned down low, Tesfaye cut a down-to-earth figure in his signature black puffa jacket and trousers. Aided only by a guitarist, a drummer, and his personal DJ, The Weeknd stormed through some of his biggest hits including ’Loft Music’, ‘Wicked Games’, ‘Crew Love’ and ‘The Knowing‘. One highlight of the night was when The Weeknd played ‘Glass Table Girls‘. The track is from his first mixtape, ‘House Of Balloons‘, and fans went crazy for it.

The Weeknd’s performance was only an hour-and-a-half long, which is a shame as he has such an impressive back catalogue considering he’s only been around for a short time. It would have been amazing to have heard more tracks, especially from his most recent mixtape, ‘Echoes Of Silence’.

With this UK tour, The Weeknd has proved that he is more than deserving of all the buzz that surrounds him. He pulls off performances effortlessly and flawlessly and this can only be the beginning for this incredible artist.”

I sadly missed seeing Nigerian French singer-songwriter and recording artist, Asa (pronounced “Asha”) perform last year in London’s IndigoO2. Nevertheless, I have been steadily following her career and love her new song and video ‘The Way I Feel’, off her album Beautiful Imperfection.
Asa has received some criticism from the Afro-pop culture blogosphere due to her recent change of tune; going from a strong afro-political stance to something a lot more light-hearted and pop driven.
With strong musical influences such as from Marvin Gaye, Fela Kuti, Bob Marley, Aretha Franklin, Sunny Adé, Ebenezer Obey and Lagbaja; I think it’s quite fitting for Asa to have established herself as a conscientious artist who has the ability to express societal struggles, without completely extracting the light-hearted elements of life.
“I think it’s because I am in love with life. I am embracing all the changes I have experienced and I am writing about them. My first album was quite political and I will never stop talking about the things I see around me – the corruption, the suffering, the bad leadership – but politics can be tiring. Politicians keep making promises they do not keep and it is very sad,” Asa
At this point, I don’t think critics should’nt be too quick to suggest that Asa is moving away from her political routes, but rather giving us a great balance of musical content. I’m a fan!
First time I heard Aluna George, I intrigued by her 90′s R&B type vocals infused with a soulful electric pop beat. I like her quirkiness and I’m glad to be hearing her track “I know you like it” growing in popularity over mainstream radio stations (especially Radio1 and 1xtra). Therefore it was great to see her perform at the relaxed and fresh Sanderson Hotel, and I look forward to seeing her again this Saturday at the Wireless Festival to! (Although she tell me she doesn’t know what time she’s performing)

Thursday’s new band: Maverick Sabre.
Alongside the Queens Jubilee, there is a lot to get excited about this month! Some of my favourite artists are coming to London city and I can barely contain myself.
In July we can look forward to Wireless Festival! I’ve got my tickets to see Drake and Nicki Minaj, plus there is will be Aloe Blacc will be performing at the Vintage Festival along with Sergio Mendes, Betty Wright, and Brian Jackson between the 13-15th July.

I very briefly recall going past this shop a while back, and in my attempt to confirm what I was seeing in a moving car, my neck almost did an exorcist style 360 spin. However as with most interesting things you see in passing, I didn’t take a picture or write a note to myself to check it out, and thus forgot all about it.

Several months later I saw the shop again whilst browsing on Tumblr, and I figured, well if this isn’t a sign for a great blog post then I don’t know what is. So I grabbed the picture, and decided to give the people behind this bodacious building a call *bodacious should be pronounced in American surfer dude accent*.

I spoke to a very cool guy who sent me even more pictures of their other shops, which are just as *accent*…bodacious!
[Me] As you know…completely in awe of your shop design. How long have you had it like this?
[Cool guy over the phone] We’ve had it this way since 2008, and have also developed our other two stores with a similar style, one for drums and the other for acoustics
[Me] How did you come up with this idea, what was the process?
[Cool guy over the phone] Well it was the owner of the business; but it started from us sitting in a car outside of the shop one day when the shutters were down, and randomly thinking “hey, the shop looks like an amplifier” … and really from there we got a team together, which consisted of a local graffiti artist, builders and designers; and here it is!
As I mentioned, the cool guy over the phone who I now know is called Ed kindly emailed me some pictures, which are even better than the one I found on Tumblr, so I hope you enjoy.

My song of the week is ‘Midnight City’ by M83, taken from their 2011 album ‘Hurry Up’. The song is falls into the electro pop bracket and makes me want to find my 80’s throwback leather jacket and walk down the high-street as the cool but calm protagonist in some Martin Scorsese film.
I downloaded the album ‘Hurry Up’ from iTunes, and I hope to listen to it properly when I finally stop putting Midnight City on repeat. This is what lead musician Anthony Gonzalez said about the album
”I wanted to make a very eclectic album but also something not too long. Making a double album was a dream of mine for a long, long time and I felt ready to make this move. It was written like a soundtrack to an imaginary movie with different ambiances, different atmospheres, different tempos, different orchestrations and different instrumentation….When I make an album it’s always about nostalgia, melancholy in the past and memories.”
The song is ultra-cool, and I can only hope M83 will be playing at the Wireless festival this year!

I saw these guys listed on iTunes and was intrigued by the African looking mask and decided to have a listen. I love it, and hope to see them play in Nottingham this Feb. Their sound is mint, so I hope you like it as much as I do. Enjoy x

” I would rather not talk about myself as a person, and let the music speak for itself. The name SBTRKT is me taking myself away from that whole process. I’m not a social person, so having to talk to DJs to make them play a record is not something I want to do. It’s more about giving them a record as an anonymous person and seeing whether they like it or not. If they play it, they play it.”
New Years Eve I hosted a get together with close friends, one of the evenings random activities involved I guess what can be described as a few minutes of madness. Trisha, an old time friend who was down from Brussels played a track from the afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti called ‘Expensive Shit‘.
The song is named after the album which refers to an incident in which the Nigerian police tried to arrest Kuti by planting a joint on him. Kuti managed to eat the joint, prompting police to bring him into custody and wait for him to produce the excrement. According to legend he managed to use another inmate‘s feces and was eventually released.
For over 10 minutes we all moved independently around the house, not talking but just feeling the beat, kicking a leg out here, jumping over there, and just being free with the music. It was above and beyond fun, it was beautiful to all be around each other and just move independently from the presence of any judgement. I intend to incorporate that free spirited-ness into 2012.
